How to Add Google Analytics or Ad Tracking Tags
If you’re running Google Ads or want to track website analytics with Google Analytics, you’ll need to add a tracking tag to your site.
Before You Begin
Have your tracking tag code ready from Google — usually a JavaScript snippet starting with <!-- Google tag (gtag.js) -->.
Steps to Add Your Tracking Tag
Step 1: Add your tag
- Go to Website + App > Site Editor and select your site
- Open Settings or Advanced Settings
- Find the Custom Code or Head Scripts section
- Paste your complete tracking tag code into the field
- Save your changes
Step 2: Publish your site
Publish your site so the tracking code goes live on all pages.
Verifying Your Tag Works
Google Analytics: In your GA4 account, go to Real-time reports and visit your site in another tab — you should appear as an active user.
Google Ads: In your Google Ads account, check the conversion action status — it should show “Recording conversions.” Note: it may take a few hours.
Common Tags You Might Add
- Google Analytics (GA4) — website traffic and behavior analytics
- Google Ads Conversion Tracking — track when ad clicks lead to actions
- Facebook Pixel — track conversions from Facebook ads
- Other tools — Hotjar, Clarity, etc.
Troubleshooting
Tag not working? Make sure you published your site after adding the tag, clear your browser cache, and verify the code was copied completely and without modification.
Getting errors? Check for typos in the tag ID and confirm the code wasn’t accidentally altered when pasting.
