How Email Unsubscribe Links Work
Learn how email unsubscribe links work in Zipper, including why test emails don't include them and how real recipients can manage their preferences.
How Email Unsubscribe Links Work
Every marketing email sent to real recipients automatically includes an unsubscribe link and tracking pixel in the footer — no setup needed. This ensures compliance with CAN-SPAM and GDPR.
Why Test Emails Don’t Have Unsubscribe Links
Test emails omit the unsubscribe link and tracking pixel intentionally: they aren’t tied to a real recipient record, so there’s no subscription to manage. When you send the real campaign, all recipients receive the link automatically.
What Happens When Someone Unsubscribes
- Recipient clicks the unsubscribe link and is taken to a confirmation page
- Their email preferences are updated — no more marketing emails from your organization
- They remain in your customer list and can still receive transactional emails (receipts, confirmations)
- They can re-subscribe through the customer app
Where to See Unsubscribed Contacts
Go to Marketing > Email, select a contact list, and use the Unsubscribed contacts tab to filter by email subscription status.
Best Practices
- Never remove the footer section from email templates (it contains the unsubscribe link)
- Don’t re-add unsubscribed contacts to mailing lists without their consent
